Sauvignon Revisited

Kirsten (Is she my big sister? She’s older than Fiona, but younger than me), is visiting this weekend. To celebrate, we shared a few grapes, Sauvignons, from Cali. Once The Chieftain pulled out the Groth, Fiona decided to have a glass (or 4), even though she said she hadn’t planned on it. It was very nice. You could taste the fruit, but it wasn’t overpowering. I’ve found the Sauvs can be a little too much if you don’t keep them in check. Dancing Bull followed. After the Groth, it wasn’t as outstanding as before; but still a decent wine, no complaints. However, El Jefe had a wild card. Geyser Peak really hit the spot. It wasn’t quite Groth, but it was close, and less than half the price. Better than the Bull, I would say. And, I got presents, a very nice start to my birthweek!

A very nice start to the weekend. These tastings did not follow the classic format. Our strategy was to finish each bottle before moving on, but among three active tasters, not too bad! This Groth is awesome though. WSJ voted it top USA Sauv under $20 and they are on the money.

I really enjoyed the Groth as well. After receiving various suggestions from Dr. J. and Cheiftain, I wrote them all down for our trip to Spec’s. I really wanted to find the Ken Forrester Chenin, but that proved to be a failure. Next I turned my eye on the Groth, but it was a little pricey and I decided Johhny Wino should be the one getting the grown up bottle. So when Chefitain had the bottle in possesion the other night, my interest was perked. It was extremely tasty. We purchased some of the more economical Geyser Peak for Johnny Wino’s birthday party tonight. We also found a wine that I loved at the Woodlands tasting - it’s an unoaked chard (gasp!). I don’t remember the exact name, but I know it ends in “biao”, because Johnny Wino just kept telling me to remember Scott Biao! Anyway, we will have to see what Cheiftain thinks of it, although he is going to have to wait for a little while and start on sangria or cheap Cavit because I will not being partaking until I have served as an ever attentive hostess (at least for the first hour).

@Fiona - Unoaked Chards are everywhere, and they are YUMMY! Chardonnay is a great grape. Just ask Johnny Wino. His beloved Pouilly-Fuissé is 100% Chardonnay.

The three buck Chuck Chard sees very little oak if any.

@Fiona - They have the Ken Forrester at a place that Morag and I went to on Memorial, I think. I wasn’t too crazy about Specs.
