I have NEVER been told what to think about wine by ANYONE. Mostly, all I hear is people bitching about “wine snobs”. This is a false problem that people make up for some reason. It’s bullshit. It just makes me want to drink my wine alone and cry.

My shortest post ever is the most heated. I maintain the same philosophy for wine as I do entertainers; don’t get too serious on my ass. Pearl Jam was a great band until they realized how important they were and let everyone know it. George Clooney was fun until he decided everyone should think like he does.
I’m not condemning the wine community for tasting berries and citrus and grasses; I’m just saying that just because I don’t, it doesn’t mean I can’t enjoy wine also.
Josh has always been very considerate in this regard, but I’ve found that many others are not so forgiving. Yes, we’re playing into stereotypes here, and just ask Don Imus what happens when you do that. I just want everyone to grab a glass and drink up!

1998 Muga “Prado Enea” Rioja Gran Reserva $80

Always ask for the reserve list in restaurants! Morag and I had this with some Tapas. The server poured out my taster, I smelled - OMFG!. It’s not corked - time to look a little closer. The color was beautiful - a sort of ruby red with the slightest beginnings of golden wise rust indicating a little age on this guy. The nose was very complex as a bouquet had begun to bloom. There were plenty of dark spices and dried fruit, brined green olives and roasted cloves with orange peel. On the tongue this beauty was confounding. Again, the spiciness was present showing plenty of anis and even some pine (as Morag discovered). The blackest fruit surfaced on end with deep dark cherries and currants. The 13.5% alcohol, 10 year old tannin, and graceful acidity were perfectly balanced and big, giving plenty of structure that allowed this Rioja to finish FOREVER!

Nothing pisses me off more than bullshit like this. What is this guy’s fucking problem? What is he threatened by? We don’t write about wine in funny language and poetic craziness because we are snobs or because it’s cute or because we are trying to be like Parker. We do it because we love wine and it inspires us. It forces us to pay attention to what we are tasting and why we like what we do. I hate that “anti-snob” snobbery bullshit. It’s everywhere. Fuck that guy. I am going to contribute a recent tasting note to combat this bullshit.

You already know from my comment yesterday that I’m definitely in sympathy with most of what this guy is saying.

But let’s just drink on and keep trying them tasting notes anyway.

And Clemens deserves all he gets, even his bodybuilding wife.
